Stations of the Mayan Train

The Tren Maya has 34 stations spread across approximately 1,554 kilometers (966 miles) of railway through the Mexican states of Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. The Mayan Train Stations connect the region’s main tourist destinations, cities, and communities across southeastern Mexico.

Each station offers a unique experience. Some serve major cities such as Cancún, Mérida, Campeche, and Chetumal, while others provide access to archaeological sites, historic towns, nature reserves, and the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean.

Services available at Tren Maya stations

Tren Maya stations are designed to provide a comfortable and safe experience before boarding the train. While available services may vary by station, most stations offer:

Tren Maya stations were designed with universal accessibility in mind, making it easier for people with disabilities, older adults, wheelchair users, families with strollers, and travelers with luggage to move comfortably throughout the station.

Boarding process at Tren Maya stations

Before entering the platform, all passengers go through a boarding process similar to airport security screening.

1. Ticket scanning

When entering the boarding area, you must scan your ticket at the automatic ticket gates. You can present the QR code on your mobile phone or use a printed ticket in the same way.

2. Baggage screening

Afterward, all baggage passes through an X-ray screening system, while passengers walk through a metal detector as part of the station’s security screening process.

3. Platform access

Once the security screening is complete, you may proceed to the waiting area and then to the platform to board the train when instructed by station staff.

How to get to Tren Maya stations

Tren Maya stations were built in different locations depending on the characteristics of each destination. While some stations are located within or close to city centers, many are situated on the outskirts to support railway operations.

As a result, travel time between the station and downtown can vary from just a few minutes to approximately 30–40 minutes, depending on the destination.

Official intermodal transportation at Tren Maya stations

To make travel between the stations and nearby cities more convenient, Tren Maya operates an official intermodal transportation service at several stations along the route.

These buses are clearly identified as Tren Maya intermodal transportation and connect the station with key locations in the city, most commonly the ADO Bus Terminal or the downtown area.

In many destinations, the same service also operates in the opposite direction, allowing passengers to travel from downtown to the station before their train departs.

Intermodal transportation schedules

Intermodal transportation schedules are designed to coordinate with Tren Maya operations.

Buses traveling to the station depart well in advance of the train’s scheduled departure, allowing passengers enough time to check baggage and complete the boarding process before the train leaves.

At the end of the journey, the buses wait for arriving Tren Maya passengers and then provide transportation to downtown or the ADO Bus Terminal.

Not all Tren Maya stations have an official intermodal transportation service.

At some destinations, transportation is provided by taxis, mototaxis, shared vans (colectivos), or other local transportation services. Each station page includes specific information about the transportation options available.

Time zones at Tren Maya stations

The Tren Maya stations are located across five states in southeastern Mexico. As a result, the route passes through two different time zones, so it is important to be aware of this difference before traveling.

• Quintana Roo follows UTC-5 (Southeast Time). The stations located in this state are Leona Vicario, Nuevo Xcán, Cancún Airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Tulum Airport, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Chacchoben, Bacalar, and Chetumal Airport.
• Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco, and Chiapas follow UTC-6 (Central Time).

Quintana Roo is one hour ahead of the rest of the Tren Maya route.

• ⬅️ If you travel from Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco, or Chiapas to Quintana Roo, you will arrive in a time zone that is one hour ahead of where you departed.

Travel Tip

The departure and arrival times shown on your Tren Maya ticket already reflect the local time at each station, so you do not need to make any time conversions. If your mobile phone updates the time automatically, it will adjust as you enter or leave Quintana Roo.

If you use a watch without automatic time adjustment, remember to set it manually to avoid confusion during your trip.

Safety and security at Tren Maya stations

Tren Maya stations are staffed with security personnel who assist passengers during the boarding process and help oversee daily station operations. Throughout the journey, onboard staff are also available to assist passengers and ensure a safe and orderly travel experience.

Access control procedures and baggage screening are part of the security measures implemented to provide a safe, secure, and well-organized journey.

Tren Maya stops

Although the former Tren Maya stops are now officially part of the station network, RutaTrenMaya.mx continues to identify them as stops to make them easier to locate and to distinguish these smaller locations from the main passenger stations.

These stops typically offer a quieter travel experience and provide access to local communities, natural attractions, and lesser-known destinations, making them ideal for travelers who want to explore the region at a slower pace and discover places beyond the most popular tourist routes.
