What is the Tren Maya Ruta in México?

The Maya Train Route, commencing from Palenque, Chiapas, and winding its way northeastward to Cancún, Quintana Roo. Spanning two routes encircling the Yucatán Peninsula.

Additionally, it will pass through 23 Pueblos Mágicos (magical towns) and 6 hotels designated as Tren Maya accommodations near archaeological sites and natural areas.

Currently, in July 2024, the route of the Tren Maya extends from: 1) from Cancun Airport to Palenque and 2) from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen. By the end of August, the section from Escárcega to Chetumal is expected to be completed, and the last section from Chetumal to Tulum to close the circuit is scheduled for September 7 or 8, 2024.

The Tren Maya route map is divided into 7 sections traversing the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, covering an impressive 966.27 miles (1,554 km). The Mayan train route will include 40 municipalities and 181 localities spread across three distinct regions: Jungle, Caribbean and Gulf.

Incorporating advanced technology, nearly half of the route will be electrified, and the Mayan Train operates on a hybrid energy system, blending low-sulfur diesel and electric power.

The ambitious reforestation program called “Sembrando Vida” complements the Tren Maya. It is considered the largest in the world, aiming to plant 500 million fruit and timber trees in Mexico’s southeast. Additionally, authorities are expanding protected natural areas notably. They are ensuring the protection of cenotes, caves, and underground rivers by constructing viaducts and suspension bridges. Along the train route, they will implement fauna crossings.
