What is the history of San Francisco de Campeche?

In 1540, the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo the Younger (El Mozo) founded the city of San Francisco de Campeche on the west coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, the city became a significant commercial port due to its strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico.

However, it was also frequently targeted by pirates and privateers, prompting the Spanish to construct a wall around the city for protection.
