What is the History of Chetumal?

The region of Chetumal was originally inhabited by the Maya, who established an important city in the area known as Chactemal in the 9th century. The city was a significant commercial and cultural exchange center between the Maya and peoples of Mesoamerica and South America.

During the Caste War in the 1840s, Chetumal was a significant city for the Maya rebels and became the capital of the Republic of Yucatan in 1850.
