Chacchoben Archaeological Site
Quintana Roo
The most significant Maya city in the lakes area of present-day Quintana Roo. The settlements of the 3rd century gave rise to impressive constructions that can still be appreciated today, especially from the second occupation starting from the 13th century.
The extensive collection of incense burner fragments from this site highlights its importance to the region’s inhabitants, as even after its virtual abandonment between 1200 and 1450, it resurfaced as a place of veneration and pilgrimage.
