What is the history of Isla Mujeres?

The history dates back to pre-Columbian times when the island was a sacred place for the Mayans. The Mayans worshiped the goddess of the moon, Ixchel, and considered the island as one of their main pilgrimage centers.

Later on, the Spanish conquistadors renamed it “Isla Mujeres” (Island of Women) due to the statues of the Mayan goddess Ixchel that they found on the island.
