Loyal Dog
Mayan Legend
In a remote Maya village, there lived a man submerged in poverty and discontent. His only company was a dog that endured constant abuse from its owner.

An evil spirit named Kakasbal saw this as an opportunity to take advantage of the anger the dog surely felt towards the man.

One day Kakasbal approached him and said, –“I see you’re sad, is something wrong?” How could I not be when my master hits and mistreats me whenever he can, replied the dog.
-“I see your master treats you poorly. You don’t deserve that. If you want, I can help you escape from him.” Oh no! replied the dog. I will never abandon him!
–“But he doesn’t treat you as he should,” I know, but I owe him loyalty.” –“He will never thank you…”

Kakasbal insisted so much that eventually, to get rid of him, the dog agreed, asking:
“And tell me, Kakasbal, what should I do in return?” -“You must give me your soul!”

The dog then said, “I will give you my soul if you can count how many hairs I have”.

The demon began counting all the hairs from the head to the tail, but when he was about to finish, the dog remembered the loyalty promised to its master and jumped to shake itself, causing Kakasbal to lose count.
–“Why are you moving?” protested the demon. The fleas make me itch, and I can’t help it, replied the dog.

And Kakasbal started again and again until he reached a hundred times, but each time he almost reached the end, the dog shook itself, and the demon lost count. Kakabal, tired, said:
–“I can’t take it anymore, I see I’ll never get it. You’ve just taught me a lesson… it’s a million times easier to buy the soul of a man than that of a dog.”

The story of the dog and its brave act of loyalty reminds us of the importance of caring for and protecting the animals that share our world. Their sacrifice and loyalty are a reminder that every creature deserves respect and love.
